How to Stay Cool at a Destination Wedding

The wonderful thing about a destination wedding is that you’re practically guaranteed sunshine - dreamy seafront views, golden hour photos on the beach, and dancing under the stars. But, let’s face it: if you’re used to UK weather, the sudden jump in temperature might catch you off guard. No one wants to feel hot and flustered on their big day (or as a guest!).

Here’s how to keep your cool, literally, at your destination wedding.

Plan your ceremony at the right time

Midday sun in places like Cyprus, Greece, or Italy can be intense. Aim for a late afternoon or early evening ceremony when the sun is lower and the light is softer, better for both comfort and your pictures!

Top Tip: Golden hour (the hour before sunset) gives you that magical glow - a photographer’s dream!

Choose light and breathable attire

Silk, chiffon, linen, and cotton are your best friends when it comes to warmer weather. Brides, think lightweight dresses with open backs or floaty skirts. Grooms, ditch the heavy three-piece suits and opt for a more relaxed linen shirt or short-sleeves shirts and chinos.

And yes, flip flops and sandals are totally acceptable for a beach wedding - comfort over formalities!

Keep guests hydrated

Set up a hydration station with iced water, lemonade, and mocktails. You could even personalise water bottles with your wedding details on it - a cute keepsake and practical too.

Use heat-friendly hair and make-up products

Whether you’re going full glam or opting for a natural look, use long-wear, waterproof products that can stand up to the heat. Ask your makeup artists if they use products suitable for the heat, and opt for a setting spray to ensure everything stays in one place.

Hair-wise? Updos, braids, or beachy waves tend to hold up better than sleek styles in humidity.

Offer shade

Umbrellas, parasols, shaded seating areas, whether you can offer some respite from the sun will go down a treat. Some venues even offer pretty canopy setups that add to the decor. Your wedding planners will know the venues best and will be able to advise on how to best set up for the day for the hot weather.

Think about your wedding menu

Lighter dishes are often better suited to warmer weather. Fresh salads, grilled fish and meat, fruit platters, and cool desserts like sorbet or gelato always win!

Pro tip: Avoid anything too creamy or heavy - especially if it’s going to sit out in the sun.

Accessorise wisely

Sunhats, stylish shades, and SPF are essential. Consider gifting mini suncream bottles to guests as wedding favours - both thoughtful and practical!

Go easy on the alcohol (at least early on)

It might be tempting to start with prosecco or cocktails early in the day, but mixing booze with high temperatures can lead to dehydration. Start with water or juice and ease into the celebratory drinks later on.

Embrace the warmth!

A warm-weather wedding is everything you dreamt of, just with a bit of added sunshine! With a few smart choices, you can soak in the heat without melting!
