La Morne is not only stunningly beautiful with its rugged mountain that juts into the Indian Ocean, but it is also rich in history.  With Mauritius being used as a shelter by runaway slaves through the 18th and early years of the 19th-centuries, the mountain’s wooded areas and hard to scale cliffs acted as the perfect protection, with many slaves forming small settlements in the caves around the summit of Le Morne.  For those watersport enthusiasts, the ocean, with its clear waters, is perfect for swimming and scuba diving and, with the windy conditions, you can also enjoy kite and windsurfing for most of the year.
